Junk Wars – Student Competition

Junk Wars is a hands-on, real-world building challenge proudly hosted by the NIBCA Workforce Development Committee. In this competition, students team up to design and construct creative projects using scrap materials. Held during the NIBCA Home & Garden Show, the event gives students a chance to validate their skills, collaborate with industry professionals, and—yes—fail forward in a safe, supportive environment.

Guided by local builders and contractors, students learn to problem-solve on the fly, improvise when resources are limited, and work with real tools and jobsite expectations. Their creations are judged by NIBCA members on design, creativity, curb appeal, ingenuity, and effective use of materials.

Junk Wars also strengthens the connection between schools and the construction industry, giving the public a front-row seat to the talent, grit, and growth happening within trades education. Final projects are displayed and auctioned to benefit NIBCA’s student scholarships and sign-on bonuses, supporting the next generation of skilled professionals.
