Habitat for Humanity of North Idaho is a proud affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, dedicated to building strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable homeownership. Since our founding in 1988, we have worked alongside local families to create safe, decent, and affordable places to call home—completing our very first build in 1991.
How We Work
Our model is built on partnership. Volunteers and future homeowners—known as Candidate Families—work side by side to build the home they will one day purchase. Each family completes “sweat equity” hours, gaining hands-on experience and pride in the home they help construct. Once the build is complete and all program requirements are met, the family buys the home from Habitat through an affordable mortgage.
But Habitat builds more than houses—we build community. The construction site becomes a place where people from all backgrounds come together, learn new skills, form connections, and serve a shared purpose. In the process, friendships grow, barriers shrink, and hope takes shape one wall at a time.
Why Homeownership Matters
Stable, affordable housing transforms lives. It gives families room to thrive, putting an end to frequent moves and uncertainty. Children can grow up in the same neighborhood, attend the same schools, and build lasting friendships. And because Habitat mortgage payments are often lower than rent, families are able to redirect income toward nutrition, healthcare, education, and a stronger future.
At Habitat for Humanity of North Idaho, we build homes, but we also build brighter futures.
